We welcome participation. Please feel free to e-mail us with comments, cudo's darts, submissions.

info@cabbagetown.biz

We have been sadly remiss in doing the newsletter.
But we did say "occasional" at least we can't be blamed for clogging your e-mail inbox :)

With the holidays almost on our doorstep and a proliferation of scam mails in our inbox, we decided to

  1. do the news letter
  2. use the opportunity to warm you all about e-mail and other online scams.
  3. as today is the UN's International Day of Disable Persons, talk a bit about Internet access for the disabled.
  4. plug the Cabbagetown Theatre, A Singular Eye photo exhibit by Eric Morse and the Cabbagetown Book Club.

We have sadly said goodbye to one of our area B&B's, the "Hamilton House" has closed. Good luck to Ian & Joyce Hamilton in their new home and endeavors. Sadly they lost their cat "Tim" in the move. For info on Tim, please visit our Lost & Found page. Another Cabbagetowner is looking for her cat Oliver as well. Insertions on Lost & found are free, we are glad to have assisted in uniting one lost dog, three cats and a cell phone with their respective owners..

The Ben Wicks Restaurant and Pub is well worth a visit, if for no other reason than to experience the funkiest dining room in Cabbagetown.

From the Ben Wicks website:
"Recent renovations in both the pub and restaurant have enhanced the warm and welcoming atmosphere that Ben himself created over 24 years ago.

The Ben Wicks-Town Grill joint venture has created an entirely new dining-room menu that takes the trend to much-loved comfort foods to new levels of interest and appreciation. David Folkerth's creativity and love of good food has also added new ideas and flair to our lunch and evening pub fare"

SCAMS DISABILITY AND THE INTERNET
In the last month we have receive over 200 emails that involves scams. These are versions of "Advance Fee Fraud".

Nigerian 419 scam.
Invariably the person claims to have control of some shadily obtained money and need you to help "invest" it in your country. You generally get 10%. Sometimes the writer is dying and regretting all the evil they have done in their sordid lives.

If they (mails) were all true, we could have made 80 million dollars in the last month alone. But it's not. Beware of these, do not reply to the e-mails.

Read more about the scams here.

Lottery Version.
Lately it has mainly been the Lottery version of the Nigerian 419 Scam that informs you that you have won X dollars in a (usually) lottery in the Netherlands. We have "won" a total of 97 million from about as many versions of the scam in the last month.

If you get an e-mail do not reply to it, ignore it. Read more about it here.

Identity Theft Scams.
All we can say is: DO NOT for any reason give any banking information, any ID or password information via an e-mail or website address that arrives in an e-mail. Neither the your bank, Internet server, E-bay or ANY reputable company will ask you for that kind of information via e-mail. Often these scammers set up websites that look identical to the legitimate website.

Did you know that today Dec. 3,  is United Nations International Day of Disabled Persons? More about that on the UN website.

ITXP.ca an Information Technology company is championing disability access for website design. The ITXP web site is fully disability accessible.

In 2001 the Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (P A L S) following up on the 2001 Census estimated that the number of Canadians living with disabilities are 3.6 million.
The population of Canada (2003 Census data) is approx. 30.5 million. Ergo, 10 percent of Canadians have some form of disability.

cabbagetown-toronto.com,
our other website

Because of an increasing workload for ITXP.ca Accessible Website Design and the passion I feel for making the Internet accessible I have decided that taking care of two personally owned websites has become too much.
Cabbagetown.biz will also soon be fully disability access enabled.

We are therefore in the process of merging the two. We will keep cabbagetown-toronto.com running for a while until the merger is complete. The domain name, which is TOP in Google when you type in "Cabbagetown",  will be offered for sale at some point in the future. We will continue with cabbagetown.biz
